Pathfinder for: Medical Assisting

This pathfinder will help you find the best materials about your topic. Remember that sometimes it is necessary to learn more about a topic in order to select a specific aspect of that topic to report on. Books such as encyclopedia and handbooks are good starting points for that purpose.

 

Finding Books, Videos, etc.

Try the following resources first if you are looking for books or videos about your topic. You may need to use the index of the book to help you decide which aspect of the topic you want to focus on. The index is more detailed than the content page.

If you need to search for information online use one of these:

  • Refdesk. com- http://refdesk.com/index.html–says that it is the single best source for facts
  • Internet Public Library- www.ipl.org – is a good web site to use for focusing a topic and find resources in the process. It features directories of online texts, newspapers, encyclopedias, magazine, and reference materials.
  • netLibrary is a collection of electronic books. You may use the GALILEO searching instructions below to locate this database.

Finding Magazine Articles

Try the databases in GALILEO first if you are looking for magazine articles. Login to www.galileo.usg.edu and enter your topic in the search box. Evaluate the results. Some of the items may contain the full-text of the article. Or, search specific databases. We suggest:

  • Career & Technical Education
  • Health Source-Nursing
  • Proquest Nursing Journals

Enter the database name in the Find by database box on the GALILEO homepage to begin.

 

Reliable Websites

MedlinePlus http://medlineplus.gov is an excellent site to use to locate information about a health topic condition, or disease. The pictures, diagrams and interactive tutorials will definitely be of interest to you. Other sites may be found at the Internet Public Library www.ipl.org and by using another directory or a search engine.

American Association of Medical Assistants www.aama-ntl.org – CMA practice exams are at this site.
