Mayor Declares American Free Enterprise Day

MOULTRIE , GA. In a proclamation ceremony held Monday Moultrie Mayor Bill McIntosh declared November 15 th American Free Enterprise Day through the efforts of Phi Beta Lambda [PBL], Moultrie Technical College’s student business organization.

The mayor’s proclamation highlighted the importance of the free enterprise system and stated that the City of Moultrie considers this economic system a basic part of our life and wishes to see it maintained and strengthened.

According to PBL president Angela Harden, the day is set aside each year to recognize how the system has made our country prosper through improved productivity, better technology and entrepreneurship.

Following an initiative by former U.S. president Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s, American Free Enterprise Day developed into an awareness program called “Getting Involved” under a grant from the Chevron Corporation. The program focus was to get PBL chapters involved in their local business communities and to provide opportunities for members of the business communities to become involved in the process of educating tomorrow’s business leaders.

Moultrie Tech’s PBL chapters in both Moultrie and Tifton provide the valuable service of developing leadership, encouraging cooperation, promoting good citizenship, teaching up-to-date business information, and inspiriting patriotism among its members.

To top off the national celebration, the PBL chapter will award several new businesses in the area with certificates highlighting their participation in the free enterprise system.
