TIFTON, GA. As a part of Moultrie Technical College’s Tifton campus dual enrollment program in Environmental Horticulture, in which high school students take college-level classes while still in high school, Tiftarea Academy students recently scoped the lawn, rummaged through shrubs and scaled trees in search of insects.
Their targets were pests such as mole crickets, Japanese beetles, June beetles, pine beetles and azalea caterpillars that affect the turf, plants and trees.
Taught on-site at Tiftarea Academy by Moultrie Tech instructor Cherie White, students take classes in Pest Management, Horticulture Construction, Landscape Installation and Interpersonal Relations. At the end of the academic year these dually-enrolled students will receive a certificate in Lawn Maintenance from Moultrie Tech with the option of continuing the program to receive a diploma in Environmental Horticulture in the future.
