New programs like Neuromuscular Therapy at Moultrie Tech continue to build the college’s enrollment and send technicians into a growing field in Southwest Georgia. Neuromuscular students Melissa Selph and Kesyla Alford practiced their deep tissue massage skills on Albany State University students as a part of their training at the Ebony Magazine Escape Spa Care and Pampering Experience College Tour at ASU on October 12th.

MOULTRIEMoultrie Technical College reached an all-time high enrollment this fall quarter, surpassing 2,000 students for the first time in the college’s 42-year history.

Scott Hudson, vice president of student services, said the college had an enrollment of 2,008 students for the Fall 2006 Quarter. That is a 2.5 percent increase in enrollment from the 1,951 students enrolled during Fall 2005. In the last 10 years, the college has had a 100 percent growth in enrollment.

The growth of Moultrie Technical College is especially significant because Hudson said many Georgia colleges and universities reported declining enrollments this fall term.

A major reason why Moultrie Tech has been able to maintain growth can be attributed to its almost 300 full- and part-time faculty and staff, Hudson said. The faculty teaches students using cutting-edge technology, and the admissions, recruitment and marketing departments do a great job attracting students to the college.

“It is a true team effort,” he said.

Jana Wiggins, director of marketing and public relations, said Moultrie Tech can also attribute its growth to the communities it serves. There are five campuses in Colquitt, Tift, Worth and Turner counties, and the college’s service area provides them with class selection to best serve the students.

“Moultrie Tech puts classes out there where students can basically walk right into jobs,” Wiggins said.

Online classes that Moultrie Tech provides have also been a huge part of the college’s growth, Wiggins said. The online classes allow a person to earn college credit by taking the classes in the convenience of their own homes.

Hudson said Moultrie Tech has a strong presence in high schools, as the college has 397 dual enrollment students for the Fall 2006 Quarter. That number is the second highest dual enrollment students in the state. Dual enrollment allows students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time.

Wiggins said programs recently added to Moultrie Tech’s curriculum also contribute to its growth. Programs such as the neuromuscular therapy program help the school to meet needs in the communities they serve.

“As long as we continue to add programs that meet needs in the community,” Wiggins said, “we’ll continue to grow.”

Even though Moultrie Tech is one of the few area technical schools with enrollment growth, Wiggins said it is just as good for Georgia’s entire technical college system to grow. Each school helps to meet needs in the community it serves, and the colleges work together to best help each school and those it serves.
