The Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) Foundation recently presented Moultrie Technical College with funds to provide a Surgical Technology instructor for the Moultrie Tech Tifton Campus. The TRMC Foundation began this program due to the rising needs of healthcare professionals. TRMC is dedicated to improving healthcare in Tift and surrounding counties and with the help of surgical technicians, Tift Regional is able to secure the healthcare market in the surgical areas. Surgical technicians are a part of the nation’s fastest growing occupational segment with a 98 percent job placement for Southwest Georgia. In the past year, 14 technicians graduated from the program and they are currently employed at Tift Regional Medical Center, Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie, Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
The Moultrie Technical College is dedicated to this program and they strive for excellence by providing on-site training for the students. Sherry King, RN Surgical Technology Instructor stated “I appreciate the donations that we have received from the Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation. The financial support and clinical educational experience that TRMC and its Foundation have provided for our program are vital components for the continued success and advancement for our program.”
Surgical technicians, often called operating room technicians or “scrubs”, perform a variety of duties in an operating room before, during, and after surgery to provide technical support to the surgical team. These tasks ensure a sterile and safe surgical environment. Students will learn how to sterilize instruments, prevent and control infection, and handle certain drugs and supplies.
