MTC Turner County Campus Single Mother Among December Graduates

Angelica Wooten, Graduate, and Donna Waters, Instructor

Thirty-two-year-old single mother Angelica Wooten of Moultrie Technical College’s Turner County Campus, left, pursued her education at MTC in addition to the daily responsibilities of raising three children on her own.  Called “Angel” by friends and family, she has a daughter but also gained custody of two nephews while in college.

According to her Cosmetology instructor Donna Waters, “She has endured a lot in her life to make it here as a graduate and has achieved her final goals.  She was in school through all the trials and tribulations of raising three kids on her own and keeping her grades and hours up.  She has always gone above and beyond her duties in class.  She came to class on days that she did not have to be here just to be ahead on hours so that she would not be behind.”

“It would be much easier to just quit, but I have children at home who depend on me and I want to show them that they can achieve and graduate with high goals and standards no matter how hard it gets,” said Wooten.

Waters added, “I am very proud to have her as one of my graduates.  I will miss her greatly, and I know that she will be very successful in her career.”

Wooten, joined by Waters, right, as they prepared to enter Withers Auditorium at Moultrie Technical College’s semi-annual commencement ceremony held Thursday evening, December 18, was honored with a cosmetology diploma. She was also a Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership nominee and an MTC President’s List designee in 2008.

Wooten was among hundreds of her fellow MTC graduates, as the college recognized 220 allied health, business and computers, personal and public service, and technical and industrial program graduates in addition to over 170 adult education (GED) program graduates from its four-county service area of Colquitt, Tift, Turner and Worth.
MTC president Tina Anderson congratulated the summer and fall quarter graduating classes of 2008 as MTC Early Childhood Care and Education instructor and 2008 Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year award winner Kathryn Kent led the faculty, staff and graduate processional as the event’s marshal.  MTC Board of Directors Chairman Will Vereen of Riverside Manufacturing and other members of the Board, Bill Boone of the Center of Innovation for Agriculture in Tifton and Cal McMillan of Milltown Banking Company in Lakeland, assisted the College's administration in the conferring of awards.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the commencement address given by Dr. Ivan H. Allen, president of Middle Georgia Technical College. The MTC faculty, staff and graduates also acknowledged the memory of Criminal Justice Technology instructor Brandon Back with a vacant chair and ribbon in the faculty seating area.
Twenty-two of the credit program graduates saluted reside in Turner County.  Many attend or have attended classes at the college’s satellite campus on Rock House Road in Ashburn.
