MTC Highlights Massage Therapy for Rotarians

Amber Schwalls Speaking to Rotary Club Members

Moultrie Technical College neuromuscular therapy (NMT) instructor and program director Amber Schwalls introduced the Moultrie Rotary Club to a relatively new form of medical treatment at the organization’s weekly meeting on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at the Sunset Country Club.  Schwalls described the variety of skills that students in her program, which is one of only two at technical colleges in the state of Georgia, learn before being hired in positions at doctors’ offices, chiropractors’ offices, spas, salons and in self-employment.  NMT, also known as deep tissue massage therapy, can be helpful for people suffering from headaches, for stroke rehabilitation, and for occupational and physical therapies. It can also help correct posture and ease pregnancy pains. The therapy is especially helpful for people with muscle pain that could otherwise keep someone from doing routine activities.  The program training at Moultrie Tech, which was added to the college’s academic roster in July 2006, helps students learn when to treat a patient or when to refer them to a physician for other treatments.  Schwalls fielded questions from interested Rotarians and explained that the year-long program allows graduates to be eligible for state massage therapy certification once completed.
