Moultrie Tech Tifton Medical Assistants Kick Off Sylvester PD Health Program

Moultrie Technical College’s Tifton Campus Medical Assisting students took blood pressures, performed blood sugar testing, recorded weights and checked heart rates of 16 Sylvester Police Department employees on Thursday, August 28, to kick off the "Proactive Rather than Reactive" health and fitness program instituted by Sylvester Police Chief Alfred Anderson.  Each participant had an opportunity to experience stress reduction exercises that included music and aromatherapy.  Prior to the health screenings the MTC students conducted educational sessions with each of the students teaching on a common health issue.  Topics presented were diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, diet, exercise and stress reduction.  MTC Tifton Medical Assisting instructor Elizabeth Peace said, “One part of the Medical Assisting program is community awareness and patient teaching.  If we are successful in teaching prevention and ways to decrease disease risk factors, our community will be a healthier one.  Hopefully more employers will recognize the advantages of instituting similar programs for their staffs.”
