Sherry King, Top 6 Finalists for Instructor of Year

Moultrie Technical College’s Sherry King, a Surgical Technology instructor on the MTC Tifton Campus, was recently named as a Top 6 finalist for the Technical College System of Georgia Instructor of the Year award out of more than 6,500 full-time faculty members in the state.  King, pictured right, accepted her accolades from TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson, left, at a ceremony in Atlanta.

Sherry King, a Surgical Technology instructor at Moultrie Technical College’s (MTC) Tifton Campus, was named as one of six finalists for the Technical College System of Georgia’s (TCSG) 2010 Instructor of the Year honor recently in Atlanta.

“Mrs. King is more than deserving to have been named a finalist for the technical college instructor of the year from among the system’s 6,500 full-time instructors and thousands more adjunct instructors,” said TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson. “The entire Technical College System of Georgia commends Sherry for her outstanding dedication to her students and thanks her for her devotion to Moultrie Tech and its mission of improving lives and building careers through technical education.”

The eventual winner of the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction was Jessica Barfield, an Early Childhood Care and Education instructor from Southwest Georgia Technical College in Thomasville.

King, who resides in Fitzgerald, was selected as a finalist for the award by panels of judges representing business, industry and higher education in Georgia.

Selection criteria included teaching experience, leadership abilities and professionalism, proven innovation in teaching techniques, community involvement, and a strong commitment to the technical education mission of the TCSG.

“It was my privilege and honor to represent Moultrie Technical College in the regional and state Rick Perkins competitions.  The best part of the process was having the opportunity to share some of the great things happening at our college with people from across the state,” said King.  “We need to make sure that people are aware of the success taking place every day at Moultrie Tech and how the lives of people are changing and our communities are being positively being impacted as a result of our college and technical education.”

For King, this is not the first time she has been honored with such a designation.  She was named as the Instructor of Year at East Central Technical College in Fitzgerald in 1999 and went on to compete as a state finalist that year as well.

She was also instrumental in seeing the MTC Surgical Technology program become both nationally accredited and nationally ranked among the top five programs in the United States in 2008.

“To be chosen as one of the top six instructors out of the thousands in the Technical College System of Georgia is a huge accomplishment for Mrs. King, and we could not be more proud of her.  She is an outstanding, caring instructor who gives her all to her students, and we are fortunate to have her on the Moultrie Tech team,” said MTC’s Executive Vice President Jim Glass.

For the next year, state winner Barfield will serve as the technical college system’s ambassador for technical education instruction. She will make numerous appearances around Georgia to speak about the great opportunities offered by the technical college system. She will also be honored by the Georgia General Assembly and receive a personal commendation from the Governor.

This year, Georgia’s technical college instructors will educate and train a record 190,000 students who enrolled in the 28 colleges of the Technical College System of Georgia. The colleges offer more than 600 degree, diploma and certificate programs in a variety of fields including the growing and in-demand career areas of healthcare, aerospace, life sciences, energy and the environment, and agribusiness.
