Moultrie Tech Fills Boxes of Hope
Moultrie Technical College students from several organizations united this winter for the cause of Boxes of Hope, founded by Christopher Oates of Sylvester. Oates, who suffers from Ewing’s Sarcoma, had seen families who had to do without basic toiletries and entertainment for small children while staying out of town at cancer treatment centers. He decided to start making boxes with items for personal care and small toys for children to help families cope with difficult stays during long treatments of loved ones.

Amanda Griffin, a student at Moultrie Tech, proposed that the college help in the efforts to make the boxes for the month of February as its founder’s health declined. She brought the proposal and information about the charity to members of the Student Leadership Council at their January meeting during the Winter Quarter.
Oates had made and donated 400 boxes as of January 31. His goal has been to have at least 400 more donated in his lifetime. Students from MTC’s Collegiate DECA, Phi Beta Lambda and the Student Leadership Council rallied together for the cause with a donation drive beginning January 31 through March 4 in which two full carts of supplies were collected.
“This was a great opportunity for us, and we are blessed to have been involved,” said William Robinson, MTC Student Leadership Council president. “This selfless young man is leaving behind a legacy of compassion, and we are honored to be a part of it.”
MTC officials say the success of this drive has been fulfilling for the Oates family, and they have expressed their appreciation to everyone involved.
