MOULTRIE, GA – Four Moultrie Technical College (MTC) students earned awards for placing in the annual Georgia Collegiate DECA competitions. Held February 12 in Atlanta, the competition included business simulations requiring students to apply what they learned in the classroom to solve problems involving real world situations.
The State Conference hosted team and individual events as well as the election of new state officers. Moultrie Tech students brought home awards from three events with two students being elected as state officers.
Collegiate DECA, formerly called Delta Epsilon Chi or DEX, is a national organization for marketing and business students. The state conference is held annually for members from colleges throughout Georgia. At the conference, students compete in event categories ranging from Business Law to Marketing Management.
“The students appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate their business and communication skills and the chance to interact with the business professionals who serve as judges for the competitive events. This year Georgia membership grew 22 percent statewide, and we have added new college chapters,” said Karen Howard, club state DECA advisor and marketing instructor at DeKalb Technical College.
Ninety-five students from ten colleges participated in the competitions. Winners from Moultrie Tech included first place awards to Michelle Coronado in the Hospitality category and Donna Bryant-Withem in the Entrepreneurship competition. Mary Stewart and Elizabeth Stinebaugh won the second place prize in the Entrepreneurship Team category. All four of Moultrie Tech’s state winners will be attending and will compete at the International Collegiate DECA Conference in Orlando, Florida, April 13-17.
In addition to placing in their respective events Stinebaugh and Coronado were elected as state officers. Stinebaugh was newly elected as Reporter/Historian. Coronado, who served as Secretary/Treasurer for the 2010-2011 year, was re-elected this year as Vice President.
