Moultrie Tech Named 2011 TAG Excalibur Awards Finalist

The Technology Association of Georgia [TAG], an organization dedicated to the promotion and economic advancement of Georgia’s technology industry, in collaboration with its Business and Technology Alliance society [B&TA], recently announced Moultrie Technical College [MTC] as finalist for the 2011 Excalibur Awards in the educational category.

TAG’s annual Excalibur Awards recognize Georgia-based companies for their high-tech innovations based on the complexity of the problem that was solved technologically, the creativity of the solution, and the return on investment.

Moultrie Tech was selected for its use of 3-D technology in the classroom. MTC recently became the first technical college in the Technical College System of Georgia to use the 3-D educational tool that was initially developed for U.S. Department of Defense training.

The College uses the fully-integrated and portable 3-D theater system that allows students to visualize different processes, mechanisms and methods that will help them once they graduate and are in the workplace.  The first group of students who are using the technology are in MTC’s allied health programs, where they can watch processes such as antibiotic metabolism and cell division, among many others.

There are thousands of 3-D lessons in the system’s on-board database, and many of MTC’s various programs will benefit from the technology. Moultrie Tech currently has three such systems but will receive four more in the near future. The technology was purchased by the college through a grant.

Other finalists in the educational category were Georgia Gwinnett College [GGC] and Georgia State University [GSU] with GGC taking home the prize for their iTouch Chemistry Project on October 21 at the annual awards ceremony.

Additional and notable Georgia companies who were either finalists or winners in various categories were The Coca-Cola Company, The Savannah Bee Company, Atlanta Music Project, InterContinental Hotels Group, and The Weather Channel.
