Governor's Workforce Development Office to Camp at Moultrie Tech

Melvin Everson, the director of the Governor's Office of Workforce Development, began holding regular office hours at schools within the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) this month. Moultrie Technical College (MTC) and Heart of Georgia Technical College in Dublin were first on the list.

GA Work Ready Office to Camp at MTC

Moultrie Technical College (MTC) President Tina Anderson, Georgia Governor's Office of Workforce Development Director Melvin Everson, and MTC Vice President of Economic Development Shawn Utley gathered in the Moultrie Tech library during Everson’s first visit on April 20.

To demonstrate a commitment to serve all of Georgia through economic development and the Georgia Work Ready initiative, Everson spent April 20 at Moultrie Tech with the College’s administration and Work Ready staff as well as other community leaders from the local Chamber of Commerce, Development Authority, City and County.

Additional office hour days are scheduled for May 17 and June 15 in which Everson will receive visitors and serve as host for various meetings and work sessions at Moultrie Tech. Site visits to local businesses, offices and schools are planned for April 21, May 18 and June 16.

"By establishing regular office hours across Georgia, I will be in a position to serve more Georgians on a professional basis," said Everson. "No Georgian should be penalized simply because he or she lives a certain distance from the state Capitol. I am committed to being accessible to as many Georgians as possible on a regular basis.”

"I want to thank [TCSG] Commissioner Ron Jackson and all our local partners at each Georgia technical college for their support of this effort. Without the leadership and vision of Commissioner Jackson and our local partners, this effort would not be possible."

Georgia Work Ready was launched to improve the job training and marketability of Georgia's workforce and drive future economic growth for the state. It is the only initiative of its kind to be conducted through a partnership between a state government and a state chamber of commerce.

Work Ready is based on a skills assessment and certification for job seekers and a job profiling system for businesses. By identifying both the needs of business and the available skills of Georgia's workforce, the state can more effectively generate the right talent for the right jobs.

One of the major goals of the Georgia Work Ready program is to retain and build a stronger workforce along with a positive influence on high school graduation rates in the state.

“It is impressive that the new director of the Governor's Office of Workforce Development is going to be on our campus this spring to spread the word [about Georgia Work Ready],” said Cheryl Friedlander, MTC’s local Work Ready coordinator.

Everson invites the public to follow the Governor's Office of Workforce Development on Facebook at: Georgia Work Ready and on Twitter at: @gaworkready.
