MOULTRIE, GA. Tim Walker of Moultrie has been chosen to represent Moultrie Technical College (MTC) at the EAGLE Leadership Institute February 13-15, 2012, in Atlanta. The Leadership Institute recognizes and honors those students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult education classes and programs including GED test preparation.
The Technical College System of Georgia, through its Office of Adult Education, sponsors the annual Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Leadership Institute.
Walker, who was born in 1961 and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, with 11 siblings, is married to Sharon Brown Walker and is the father of two adult children. The Walkers also have three grandchildren.
Of his decision to enroll in Moultrie Tech’s Adult Education program, he says, “I always knew I should pursue my GED diploma, but I always put it off. However, I am no longer physically able to do what I have done in the past. Therefore, I must now seek another career.”
A former truck driver, Walker says a major success he has experienced as a student in the program is “an increase in knowledge of basic language, reading and math.”
“[He] is an exceptionally talented adult education student. He approaches his education enthusiastically and demonstrates a congenial personality with his peers and our faculty,” says Sandra Griffin, an MTC adult education instructor who nominated Walker for the award. “His commitment to personal improvement and education is demonstrated in his intention to become a Moultrie Technical College student next semester.”
Walker's favorite reading materials are The Bible, non-fiction books and auto magazines. He says he enjoys watching racing and football, and his hobbies include motorcycles, cars and woodworking. His free time is spent with his family and in church activities.
After officially graduating with his GED credentials from the MTC Adult Education program in November, he recently enrolled in Moultrie Tech's Spring semester credit program classes and says he hopes to have a future career in the medical field or in criminal justice.
Walker says, “I have learned that I have the potential to do things that I never imagined myself doing.”
Representing the Colquitt County Adult Education program, he competed for this year’s Moultrie Tech EAGLE position with students from the College’s service delivery area of Colquitt, Tift, Turner and Worth counties. Students chosen from programs in those counties were Melanie Drawdy of Tift County, Magen Graddic of Turner County, and Amanda Griffin of Worth County.
Judges for the College’s EAGLE selection were Sonya Aldridge of Colquitt EMC, Lori Glenn of Family Connection, and Kelli Walker of the Georgia Department of Labor. The Adult Education students were evaluated through a speech and interview process.
EAGLE is the first statewide program in the nation that recognizes and rewards excellence among students enrolled in the adult education and literacy programs. This student recognition program is designed to create greater awareness of educational opportunities that are available in local communities across the state and to foster greater involvement in lifelong learning pursuits.
