Moultrie Technical College’s Foundation is gearing up for the first-ever Luxury Lock-up event to raise funds for student scholarships and emergency assistance on March 11 in Moultrie.  Supporters who raise at least $500 on or before March 11 will be treated to deep tissue massages, facials, and manicures and pedicures by MTC program students to reward their efforts.  Pictured, left to right, are MTC Foundation Director Darbie Avera, MTC Foundation Luxury Lock-up fundraising chairman and board member DeeDee Collins, MTC Esthetics instructor Penny Copeland and Esthetics student Nancy Wollam as she demonstrates her skills on a client.

Organizers have slated Thursday, March 11, at the College’s Industrial Drive campus in Moultrie, as the day when friends of the MTC Foundation can receive 30-minute deep tissue massages from MTC’s Neuromuscular Therapy program students, facials from Esthetics students, and manicures and pedicures from Cosmetology students.  Fundraisers can even get health screenings, such as height, weight and blood pressure checks, from MTC’s Medical Assisting students.

The Luxury Lock-up will be the first of its kind for Moultrie Tech.  Supporters of the fundraiser must raise $500 in advance of the event; or they may use the phone bank which will be set up in MTC’s Seminar Center on the day of the event to call friends, family members, co-workers and colleagues to help them meet their goal.

Only those who reach the $500 benchmark will be released from lock-up to experience the luxury services provided by the students.

Fundraisers may even choose to transfer or donate their earned luxury services to someone else, like a spouse or friend, or as a kind gesture to someone in need.  However, all services must be rendered on March 11 between 8:00 a.m. and noon or 2:00 and 5:00 that afternoon.

DeeDee Collins, a retired educator and MTC Foundation Luxury Lock-up fundraising chairman and board member, says of the new event, “Due to the recent state budget cuts that our college is experiencing, Moultrie Tech is doing much more with much less.  And because of a tough economy, the MTC Foundation has seen a sharp upswing in the number of requests from students for emergency financial assistance and scholarships.  We need events like this to help meet those needs and keep students in college.”

MTC Foundation Director Darbie Avera agreed with Collins that student needs have increased over the past year. “Last year, we received 19 requests for financial help and 40 book scholarship applications.  This year, we have already received 25 requests, and 62 students have applied for help with book charges.  We simply cannot meet all the needs with our current resources.”

Avera also believes it is important for members of the community to visit the MTC campuses to see what students are doing to be ready for life after technical college.

“Bottom line, we get students prepared and trained in their chosen fields so they can get jobs right out of college. Many times students get their hands-on work experience by training on members of the community. And several of the services offered during the Luxury Lock-up day are available by appointment at a reduced rate to the community during the week,” she said.

Persons interested in being locked-up on March 11 to raise funds for the Moultrie Tech Foundation or to nominate someone for lock-up should contact Darbie Avera at (229) 217-4145 or by email at davera@moultrietech.edu.
